How to care for your new pet rabbit

If you own or raise rabbits you already know that it is an interesting experience, and doesn’t tend to be especially difficult either, as long as you do a few basic things.  While not quite as popular as dogs and cats when it comes to consideration for “pet” status, rabbits really do make for an excellent addition to your home or family.  If you’re ready to take the plunge and adopt a bunny, here are some care methods to consider familiarizing yourself with.

Fresh water 2 times a day

Just like humans, rabbits are mammals which require lots of water in order to maintain proper functionality.  Moreover, aside from simply providing it (assuming that you don’t have some sort of system set up which allows them to drink freely), you’ll also want to ensure that the rabbit is drinking clean water.  To make a long story short, bunnies can sometimes be messy, even regularly contaminating their own water with all manner of objects.

Proper diet

Just like any other animal out there (including us humans) a proper diet is an absolute necessity for a number of reasons, be it maintaining general health, happiness, or longevity.  When it comes to rabbits, you’ll find that a cup of your typical pellets in addition to 5 or 6 vegetables (chopped up into bite-sized cubes) should provide a good deal of the daily nutrition they require.  Some of their favorites might include:

  • Carrots

  • Kale

  • Celery

  • Bean sprouts

  • Cilantro

Wires inside the home

For those with pet rabbits who roam about freely inside their homes, it’s vitally important that you – keep all electrical cords up and out of the way, find a way to shield your cables so that your little bunny can’t chew through them, or simply unplug things which aren’t being used every single time.  Needless to say, rabbits are big “chewers” and tend to gnaw on anything stringy or wispy, so please consider this when looking around at your home.

Invest in a quality cage, or construct a pen

Rabbits that tend to be caged really need an environment where they are able to move around in (for obvious reasons).  For the person who has one or more adult rabbits, it’s probably a good idea to just go ahead and build a pen for them.  If you live in a warm climate, it’s probably going to be possible to construct a nice one which you can have them in all year long.  However, if you reside in a colder territory, or one in which falls and winters tend to be quite chilly, placing a pen inside your garage, or even in the home (in a specific corner of one room) might be a good idea.  As always, cleanliness is a major concern, not just for the animals, but also you and your loved ones.
